This Weekend in Colorado

This upcoming weekend is a big one for Colorado. Not only is the X Games going on in Aspen, but the continent's largest industry trade show is going on in Denver as well. We at Powder7 are excited to go to the SIA Snow Show to see the skis for the 2012-2013 season. We'll see new boots, bindings, poles, and outerwear. There will be new technologies, styles, and patterns. Over 20,000 ski and snowboard industry professionals will convene right here in Denver for this show.

Although the show is industry-only, if you're in the Denver area, there are events you can go to.

Our friends at Icelantic are putting on the first ever Winter on the Rocks concert at Red Rocks on Friday. Common and Atmosphere are headlining. Also playing are Grieves + Budo and Get Cryphy. We hope it snows during the show!

*Update* Transworld Snowboarding Riders Poll Awards ft. Blackalicious at the Fillmore Theater on Friday. Winners of the Riders Poll Awards will be announced and Blackalicious performs following the awards. Doors open at 7pm. More info here.

The Cold Smoke Awards People's Choice Tour stops in Denver on Thursday at the Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom. The Peoples Choice Tour kicks off The Cold Smoke Awards: Its purpose is to give the audience an opportunity to view films in their entirety, and cast a direct vote on their favorite film. A casual setting creates an opportunity for direct feedback from the audience, and promotes networking between filmmakers, athletes, and other talent. Lots of gear, lift passes, accommodations, and other prizes are given away as means to get people fired up on the coming winter.  The Peoples Choice Award is determined by the total votes of this tour and is awarded to the winning filmmakers at the Cold Smoke Awards in February. Show starts at 8pm, $3 Big Sky Brews, 10 Lift ticket giveaways and tons of prizes, After party presented by Bridging the Music. More info here.

Another cool concert is Snowdown 2012 at City Hall, 1144 Broadway on Thursday. Performances from Dilated Peoples, Twista, DJ VAJRA (#1 DJ in the World, 2011 DNC Champion), Na Palm (Chicago, IL), Ecto Cooler (Hollywood, CA), DJ Mada (Denver, CO), and DJ Cassidy (Denver, CO). This concert is sponsored by Never Summer Snowboards, Pacifico, and Neff Headwear. More info here.

And of course there are the Winter X Games in Aspen at Buttermilk Mountain. You can find out more about lodging, parking, and the event schedule here. The X Games competitions take place from Jan. 26-29. From Skier Cross to Slopestyle to Big Air, you'll see skiers in most competitions. There is also a monoski exhibition! The networks of ESPN and ABC will air 16 hours of live footage and 25 hours of total programming. With basic cable, you won't miss a beat. With the Olympics coming up in 2014, we'll surely see athletes pushing themselves and throwing down new tricks. Its an exciting weekend here in Colorado!
